Recipe of the Week: Jam Drops

Today is Biscuit Day, so we thought we'd share one of our all-time favourite biscuit recipes with you...

The humble Jam Drop is a firm favourite in our family. This classic biscuit recipe should be a staple in every household.

Here's why we love Jam Drops:
1. They are easy to whip up last minute if you need to bring a plate for morning tea
2. They are fun to make with the kids
3. They're an ideal crowd-pleaser for fundraisers, parties or functions
4. The ingredients are simple and usually available in most households at any given time.

Image from www.thefifowife.com.au

Ingredients:
125g butter
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 cups self raising flour
Jam

Method:
1. Cream butter and sugar. Add the eggs and beat well.
2. Sift flour into the butter/sugar/egg mixture and mix to combine.
3. Make mixture into stiff balls (approx. the size of a walnut) and place on greased oven tray
4. Dip the end of a wooden spoon into flour and use this to make a hole in each ball
5. Fill each hole with jam
6. Bake in a moderate (180 degrees celcius) for approx. 10 minutes or until biscuits are lightly golden.

Tips:
1. Experiment with different flavoured jams - we usually use raspberry, but marmalade, fig and homemade jams are also delicious.
2. Biscuits can be dusted with icing sugar to 'dress up' for a special occasion.

Handmade gift of the week: Cork sign for your bar or mancave

Every home bar or mancave needs a great sign, and this one's a beauty! It's eye-catching, and a great way to use up wine bottle corks...

Image from www.indulgy.com

Here's why you need one:
1. It's easy to make - simply find the letters and font you want and print them out to use as a template to glue your corks together.
2. The look has a natural, organic feel, but is versatile enough to work with a sleek, modern interior, or a traditional interior.
3. It's a great way of reusing corks that would otherwise get thrown away.
4. The options are endless and you're only limited by the number of corks you have.

How do you reuse corks? We'd love your thoughts - please comment below...

Kraft paper gift wrapping 5 ways...

The birthday season has arrived amongst our group of friends. The lovely thing about most of the birthday parties we have been going to at the moment is that our children (most turning three) are now old enough to appreciate a birthday party (even though they haven't mastered Pass-the-parcel yet!).

Getting ready to go to a friend's birthday party is a real event in itself at the moment. There's the present to buy, the card and wrapping paper to choose, a party outfit to select...and my three-year-old is reveling in these choices! We have had a lot of fun making these decisions together, as well as getting crafty with cards and gift wrapping.

We're loving kraft paper at the moment. You know, the stuff that you can buy cheap on a big roll at stationery shops or newsagents. Here's our latest creation from the weekend, as well as some other cool kraft gift wrapping ideas...

How to do it:
1. Take your present, as if you're going to wrap it and cut kraft paper to correct size
2. Grab some coloured markers, crayons, etc. and start drawing. We love adding a birthday message, as well as who the present is from in case the card gets separated from the pressie.
3. Wrap as you would with regular gift wrap
4. Add ribbon, twine or other embellishments

Here are some other kraft paper gift wrapping ideas...

Loving the hand-drawn spots on this paper, as well as the spotty ribbon
Image from www.catascraft.com

This one takes a little more drawing talent than I possess, but it's great to see what's possible!

Stamps are also a great way to personalise your kraft paper gift wrap
Image from www.popsugar.com

White or metallic pens on brown kraft paper gives it a fresh feel. Play around with simple design motifs such as stars, hearts, balloons. Image from www.witandwhistle.com

Product of the Week: Driinn Mobile Phone Holder

Mobile phones aren't cheap...so there's nothing worse than having to leave yours lying on the floor charging at the risk of being kicked across the room when someone doesn't see it there. But we can't always control where the power points are located, so this is where the Driinn Mobile Phone Holder comes in handy...

Driinn Mobile Phone Holder, black

Driinn Mobile Phone Holder, white

Why we love it:
  • This charging platform simply hooks over your mobile phone charger to keep it off the floor
  • It's thin, lightweight and easily folds in half to slip in your bag when you travel
  • The non-slip foam layer on the holder base prevents your phone from slipping off easily
  • It's available in black and white
  • Holder is also suitable for holding iPods and other small devices

Where do you currently charge your mobile phone?

How to organise your gift wrapping

The problem with gift wrapping materials is that they all tend to be different shapes and sizes, so are hard to store together. The solution? A handy set of draws to accommodate all your gift-wrapping bits and bobs...

Images from www.acasarella.net

Why we love it:
  • This is a tidy system that could be applied to all sorts of stationery, in addition to gift wrap.
  • You can label the draws (so that everyone in your family knows where things belong) but the see-through draws are great for locating materials quickly.
  • You can wrap a gift quickly and creatively when you can see exactly what materials you have to work with.
  • These draws can be easily sourced quite cheaply from stationery and discount stores such as Officeworks and The Reject Shop (in Australia).

How to you store your gift wrapping materials and stationery? We'd love your thoughts - please comment below...

Card of the week: Anniversary card

Anniversaries are those occasions that creep up on us and result in us hastily grabbing a card the day before. A beautiful anniversary card is something to be treasured, not just by your partner, but by another couple (such as your parents or grandparents) celebrating an important relationship milestone.

Image from Created by Rosie

Why we love it:
  • This is a timeless card that would suit many couples
  • The design is actually pretty simple - 9 squares with a heart. You don't have to add the other elements, and could even change the message to read 'Happy Birthday', 'Happy Valentine's Day', etc.
  • The white embossed card looks delicate and pure, but you could use any coloured card or paper here for a bright or tonal affect.
  • This design could also be easily applied to a square card.

Who was the last person you bought an anniversary card for? We'd love your thoughts - please comment below...

Handy Home Tips: How to sanitise your sponges

We use sponges to clean, but what if the sponge itself is full of bacteria?

Sanitise your sponge by heating it in the microwave for 1 minute before wiping down your benches.

Cool Cakes: Holy Crap You're Old!

How would you react if you received this cake for your birthday? Would you laugh or cry?

Image from www.giveitlove.com

Why we love it:
1. We're actually crying with laughter over this cake - whoever thought of this has a very good sense of humour...although it's easier to laugh about it when you're not the recipient!
2. There's actually quite a bit of effort that has gone into making this cake...the toilet roll alone looks very realistic!
3. The cake base itself is quite simple and maybe you could even use an actual (new and unused of course!) toilet roll on top?

Who would you give this cake to? And would they ever speak to you again? We'd love your thoughts - please comment below...

Gift wrapping idea of the week: Black and white

The trick with wrapping gifts for men is to keep it simple. But simple doesn't need to be boring. Simple can be striking like this gorgeous gift wrapping idea below...

Image from www.btoffee.com

Why we love it:
1. It stands out - you won't miss this present on the gift table!
2. The bold stripe gros-grain ribbon gives the gift a luxurious feel. For me, the ribbon makes this gift wrapping. Keep your eyes open for interesting ribbons to use on future gifts. This proves that plain, inexpensive paper can be 'dressed-up' with a great ribbon.
3. This idea could work well for a woman who isn't into girly colours or frills
4. You could substitute the black or white for other colours for a more tonal look, but the strong contrast between colours is what makes this wrapping style stand out.
5. You could apply any image to this gift - or remove the image completely.

What sort of gift wrapping do you like to use for a man?

Card of the week: Get well soon!

A Get Well Soon card is one of the nicest things someone can receive when they're under the weather. Especially one like this - it's easy to make and is sure to bring a smile to your recipient's face!

Why we love it:
1. It's super easy (and inexpensive) to make! All that's required is a plaster, some goggly eyes and a felt tip pen.
2. It's funny - they say that laughter is the best remedy and a card like this is a good start!
3. It's generic - men, women, children - this card is suitable for all genders and ages.
4. You could play around with different coloured cards, plasters and facial expressions - the options are endless.
5. It's personalised - I don't know anyone who wouldn't love a card handmade just for them.

What was the last Get Well card you gave or received?
We'd love your thoughts - please comment below...
