Cool Cakes: Ice-cream Cake

This is a super-fun cake that would be great for a girl in these pastel shades...

Image from

Why we love it:
  • This fun cake evokes happy childhood memories of enjoying an ice cream in a cone
  • The drips down the side of the cake are really effective on a higher profile base, but you could use a lower, traditional cake shape as the base if you needed to.
  • The sprinkles add a lovely splash of colour and texture to the cake and offer a few colours that could be matched with the icing. It would be fun to pick out the yellow colour in the sprinkles in the icing or somewhere else in the cake.
  • The pastel shades of this cake are quite feminine, but you could experiment with chocolate and white icing or a blue and white colour scheme, for example, for a bloke.

What colours would you use for this cake?

Handmade gift of the week: House-warming gift idea

A house-warming gift is a great way to welcome someone new to the neighbourhood, whilst making a positive first impression. Here's one we found that makes us wish the Smiths were our neighbours!

Possibly the best neighbour gift ever!
Image from
Why we love it:
  • I don't know many people who wouldn't love receiving a bottle of wine, but even if they don't drink, it's always handy having a bottle of wine in the cupboard to offer to guest or friends that pop around.
  • This is a particularly thoughtful drink for new neighbours that are also renovating.
  • The addition of the hammer is funny, but also practical - something you'd definitely use after moving into a new house and need for the odd repair job or putting up pictures.
  • The little note included with this gift looks lovely and natural and personal since it's handwritten. You could use any type of gift card here, but the 'swing-tag' type with a string work particularly well.

Have you ever given or received a 'neighbour gift'?

Cool Cakes: Berry Butter Cake

Whilst cakes with fancy icing and decorations are things or beauty to marveled at, sometimes it's the simplest cakes that have the biggest impact, like this gorgeous Berry Butter Cake...

The beauty of this cake lies in using fresh, seasonal berries

Why we love it:

  • Assorted berries look fresh and colourful as a simple decoration on this cake.
  • This is a great summer cake as it's light and uses seasonal fruit which will hopefully taste its best at this time of year.
  • Butter cake is a real crowd-pleaser, but if you are catering for people with allergies you could substitute butter with Nuttelex or another dairy-free substitute, or use gluten-free flour.
  • It's quick to put together - you don't have to put too much thought into decorations as the berries as piled on top and secured in place with a layer of icing.

What's your favourite type of summer berry?

Handmade gift of the week: Framed toy cars

I haven't met a little boy who isn't obsessed with cars (or a big one, for that matter!)
The only problem with this gift is that it looks so fun the kids will want to get the cars out of the frames and play with them!

Image from

Why we love it:

  • This is a great way to re-purpose old cars you might have at home or pick up from a market, garage sale or second hand shop.
  • These look great on walls of a little boy's room
  • They are a great way of turning old 'favourite' cars you can't bring yourself to throw away into something beautiful, interesting and unique.
  • Play around with the colour of cars and frames that you choose - you could go for contrasting colours to make a bold statement, or tonal colours that match each other or existing decor.
  • Don't limit yourself to cars - this type of display could be done for any type of object - anything from dolls for a little girl's room to Nanna's spoon collection to ceramic figurines. Precious object d'art will also be protected from kids/pets/life when displayed behind glass on the wall like this.

What objects would you choose to frame in this way?

Handmade card of the week: Kiss Kiss Card

Here's a great way of using up all those old lipsticks in your draw...

Why we love it:
  • This is a really fun, playful idea for a birthday, Valentine's Day or anniversary.
  • It's a really personalised idea and could be fun framed or laminated too.
  • You could hand-write your message for an informal look, or print onto paper first and then kiss for a formal look.

Cool Cakes: Tonal Rainbow Cake

When we think of "rainbow cake" we often think of bright, contrasting colours such as red, blue, green and yellow. But this beautiful cake demonstrates that a tonal rainbow can work well too...

Image from

Why we love it:

  • It's simple, but really effective. From the outside, this cake looks quite unassuming with it's pristine white icing. The surprise lies on the inside, waiting for the cake to be cut...
  • There are a couple of ways you could achieve this tonal effect. You could opt for slightly different coloured food dyes, or play with the amount of food dye you include in each layer of sponge for a light-dark effect.
  • You could play with the way the layers are stacked for a different effect, e.g. light-dark-light-dark or a gradient effect going from light to dark.
  • This cake looks very feminine, but you could experiment with different colours, such as blues, greens, reds, etc for a man.
  • The white icing on this cake works well with the pink coloured sponge, but you could use any coloured icing too - to match the colour of the sponge, or chocolate could be good too...

What colour sponge would you choose for this cake?

The one thing EVERYONE should have in their wallet...

go-comb look great on the go with combs that fit in your wallet
Bad hair days are a bugger. But if you don't have a bag to stash a hairbrush or hair-comb in when you leave the house, what do you do?

This was a problem that go-comb founder Heather Burkman recognised when she caught up with her uncle one day. "While out to dinner with my uncle, he took a black plastic barber shop comb out of his wallet to fix his hair, and stuck it back in, awkwardly hanging out the side. Not very practical, and certainly not cool."

Heather identified the need for a compact comb, especially for men or people who don't carry a bag. "Being a fan of simple solutions, I designed the go-comb. This is a great accessory for someone on the go, or for those who prefer to travel light. The size of a credit card, it fits in any wallet and its lightweight and waterproof material makes it a resilient piece to carry anywhere. It's a great gift for men, women and teens, as well as fun bridesmaids or groomsmen gifts, especially when personalized," says Heather.

The go-comb is produced by Heather in Brooklyn, New York and Mr Gift is excited to be the first retailer in Australia to stock the go-comb brand. Below are the five go-comb options available...

We're also offering FREE DELIVERY on all orders from now until midnight Sunday 26/7/15.

Use Discount Code COMB in the Discount Code field when you place your order.

This offer can't be used in conjunction with other offers, or redeemed for cash. But please feel free to share with family and friends:)

Card of the week: Handmade string card

I've often been attracted to the lovely vibrant colours of this string/twine sold in hardware stores. It's great to see a creative way of using it that doesn't involve staking tomatoes...

Image from

Why we love it:
  • The blocks of colour give an attractive "rainbow" effect. You could just use all one colour (blue for a guy, pink for a female), alternate colours: blue/yellow/blue/yellow or use tonal colours like red and pink.
  • We love the 3 dimensional effect of the text on the string and the string on the card base.
  • The glittery text adds another lovely texture.
  • You could apply the string to any coloured base for a different effect. The white base is fresh, but black or red would also be striking.
  • You could experiment with wool, embroidery thread, ribbon - anything you can wrap around a card to create this look.
  • This is a very versatile look - apply this idea to any sized/shape card, gift tags, occasion, etc.
  • It's simple - you don't need to be "crafty" to nail this projects:-)

What occasion would you use a card like this for?

Cool Cakes: Number birthday cake

When I was a kid, mum would make my birthday cake in the shape of the age I turned each year. This was a great idea, as every year my cake was very different and when I look back at photos of me with the cake I know exactly which birthday it was. She would then decorate the cake in a colour or theme that I was into that year (a little like the Peppa Pig cake I made for my daughter here). Using a number as the base for a birthday cake is a great idea for kids, as they are usually so proud when they turn another year older. I'm not so sure this would be the case once you turn 30 though...I don't think I would want everyone to know my age now;-)

Image from

Why we love it:
  • A number-shaped base makes an interesting cake, so you can make the icing and other decorations as simple or as fancy as you like.
  • This concept works well for male or female birthdays, and especially well for kids who are excited when they turn another year older (they'll soon get over that;-)
  • If you don't want to buy all the numbers, some cake stores will let you hire cake tins.

Gift wrapping idea of the week: Stars, spots and wool

This gift wrapping style uses very simple materials for maximum impact...

Images from

Why we love it:
  • All you need to create this look is a bit of kraft paper or plain white paper and a strip of contrasting paper (ideally with a pattern), some wool and card to to cut out a star shape.
  • This would be a magical wrapping style of a child's birthday present - you could even make sure the wand is durable enough for the child to use as a toy afterwards.
  • These neutral colours work well for girls or boys, but you could play around with tonal variations of pink and blue if you wanted to make your wrapping more gender specific.
  • You could also add some glitter to the stars to make them stand out even more.
  • Play around with other shapes such as hearts instead of stars to personalise for different recipients/occasions.

What colour combination would you choose for this wrapping style? We'd love your thoughts - please comment below...
