Best purchase under $100: Thank You cards

What have you bought recently for under $100 that has changed your life (or at least enhanced it)? In our latest blog series, Best Purchase Under $100, we put the question out there, and received some great answers. This week Karl Eastring shares his favourite purchase, which resulted in him starting a business in this area called Thankfulmail.

"One of the most transformative experiences for me has been writing 'Thank You' cards on regular basis. It's such a simple thing to do, yet even science shows that expressing gratitude to people leads to happiness & higher life satisfaction. It's not only making you feel better, but it also makes someone's day to receive a handwritten gratitude card in their mailbox. It has started so many beautiful conversations with both my family and total strangers. Thankfulmail has helped me to build the habit of gratitude by delivering artisan 'Thank You' card sets on monthly basis at a cost from 6 USD." Learn more about Karl's business at

The best advice my dad gave me: Sareswari, Next Generation Digital Magazine

"The best thing my dad taught me was do not follow or beg any of your friends to join you, but be the best in whatever you are doing, and people will come follow you. I was a shy kid and didn't have many friends in school. I used to come home saying that no one wanted to be friends with me and that was what my dad told me. From that day onward, I tried to do everything better, always giving my 100% and it came true. When I got rank in class, suddenly everyone wanted to be my friend. It's always my mantra until today."
- Sareswari

Sareswari is the founder of Next Generation Digital Magazine, a digital magazine focusing on women, children and social issues and TEDx Speakers.

The best advice my dad gave me: Leonie Fitzgerald,

"The best thing my Dad taught me was to purchase an investment property with some friends, after receiving an insurance payout. I was 18 and this was the start of my love for property. Sadly, we're not taught financial literacy at school so we have appalling debt levels in Australia."
- Leonie Fitzgerald

Leonie Fitzgerald is committed to helping people master money and create wealth so they can live abundantly - whatever that looks like for them. I now help others learn the skills to get ahead in life, in a supportive and safe environment where I guide them along the journey of wealth creation through property. Learn more at

The best advice my dad gave me: Din Haikin, Shenkin

"From a young age my dad always taught me to be a kind person who doesn't change to meet other people's expectations. This has directly influenced the way I see customer service, and the way we teach our staff. Being authentic and making customers feels comfortable the moment they walk through our door is the key to Shenkin's success and to creating a happy work environment. In regards to business, the best thing my dad taught me (and continues to drill into me) is to never take your eyes off your goals and let that motivate you to push through the hard times."
- Din Haikin

Din Haikin's father Arie Haikin started the business - Shenkin - which Din is now running as Managing Director. Shenkin is a cafe and restaurant group based in Sydney, Australia, that is growing but always maintaining the traditional values of a small family business. Shenkin's menu concepts and recipes all come from Din's father who is a brilliant baker and chef who has been honing his skills since he was born into the family bakery in Tel Aviv, Israel. The best advice my dad gave me: Shayen de Silva, Content Marketing and SEO consultant

"The best thing my dad taught me was not to repeat the opinions of others and to always stick to my guns. 'People will always want you to agree with what they think' he'd tell me, 'But at the end of the day you need to see the world with your own eyes, not through the lens of someone else'. As an impressionable, sensitive kid who wanted to make friends this was a hard mantra to stick to. But as a young man I understand what he wanted to teach me. If you want friends then find some who respect what you have to say. If you want a career then find one that let's you blaze your own path."

Shayen de Silva is a Content Marketing and SEO consultant at Web Profits, and a big fan of his dad, even though he's an All Blacks supporter.

The best advice my dad gave me: Roberta Perry, ScrubzBody™

"My dad taught me how to stand up for myself and not let anyone bully me into anything."
Roberta Perry

"His mom had made a "match" in her mind with my dad and her neighbor's daughter, so she never cared for my mother much when my father said he was engaged. Through all the years my father stood his ground and stood beside my mother, eloped with her, withstood years of family criticism and to this day, even with Alzheimer's, loves her as much as he did then.

After years of being selfless and taking care of everyone else, (OK, that is my humble opinion, but work with me here) my skin was dry, itchy and irritated. In 2005, at 43, I finally realized that taking care of my skin and myself was important. I discovered exfoliating products, but like the proverbial Goldilocks, none were completely satisfying my needs and wants. I headed for the kitchen and played like a “mad chemist” to create my own. With lots of research and trial and error, I mixed up different combinations of botanical oils and came up with a winner. I brought in my sister, who has since passed and we started ScrubzBody™, in 2006, in my home. The business quickly moved to a renovated garage and then to a small manufacturing/store front, in Bethpage, NY in 2011. We moved to a larger space in 2014 and plan to move again in late fall of '17. After all these years, we are proud of the fact that our products are still handcrafted with love in small batches. We host Make Your Own ScrubzBody™ Scrub parties for kids of all ages. We sell retail, private label and wholesale. We donate to 6 charities, on a regular basis, with different scents of our products that give back, and we co-hosted The Breast of Everything for 10 years.

I was a featured speaker on Indie Business Cruise 2016 and Launch Live Speakers Summit 2016 about getting Free Publicity for your small business. My book, “The Power of Free Publicity, Using HARO (Help a Reporter Out) to Build Relationships and Get Press Without a PR Firm.” was published in August 2016.

The best advice my dad gave me: Kevin Huhn, Inspirational Speaker and Business Growth Strategist

"It is not what you know but who you know that will make a difference in your life."
- Kevin Huhn

"He shared how building relationships with people is what will help you forever because you
can't go life alone.  As these relationships get built, you nurture them and take care of them
as you would a garden. Don't abuse them. Don't give them away.

These are people and it is people who make decisions. Mistreat them and you will
lose out on the value of someone making the decision to respect and appreciate you and your work."

Known as the Hockey-ologist, Kevin Huhn is an Inspirational Speaker and Business Growth Strategist. Learn more about Kevin and his work at

The best advice my dad gave me: Dimi Ilieva, Marketing Director

"The best thing my dad taught me was to choose a husband by two things:
1. Does he make me smile every day and
2. Is he ready to help around the house without me asking for help.
I followed this advice and I believe I chose well. Ten years later, my husband still makes me smile every day. The only difference now is that neither of us is taking care of the home chores since we use Fantastic Services for all the domestic tasks. You know they say 'Behind every good marriage is a great house cleaning service'. I think they're damn right! ;)"

Dimi Ilieva is a marketing professional, mum of a 6-year-old boy and a happily married woman who finds time for the little things in life. Currently working as Marketing Director at domestic services provider Fantastic Services, operating in Melbourne and Sydney.

The best advice my dad gave me: Timmy Griffin, SEO and Digital Marketing Consultant

"My father said this to me really long time ago, I was still in school. It somehow resonated with me and pushes me. 'Never settle, don't give in.' is what my father told me ages ago. I didn't fully grasp what he meant back then. As time flew by and I got beat up by "life" it started to make more sense."
- Timmy Griffin

My name is Timmy Griffin and I work as an SEO & Digital Marketing Consultant for Fantastic Pest Control in London, UK.
